Event marking 1-year anniversary of Grindavik evacuation held
The day began with a concert at Hljómahöll, where local music group Grindavíkurdætur performed. They also had a special guest in popular Icelandic singer, Páll Óskar. The event at Hljómahöll was followed by a gathering at the Church of Grindavik. The Church was filled with people, and speeches were held about the past, present and future of Grindavik. There was a great atmosphere throughout the day, with laughter and even some tears being shared.
At the end of the day, a special light was lit outside Kvíkan, the local culture centre. The light was in the shape of a goat, which is featured on the logo of Grindavik. It marks a spark of hope for the town of Grindavik, and will continue to be lit even outside of the dark winter months.
Grindavik was recently reopened to the public, and has seen a steady flow of tourist and local visitors. Some local businesses have already reopened, including the bakery, restaurants, and local tour operators. It is expected that more will continue to reopen in the near future.
