The eruption is over for now

There is currently no ongoing eruption. The eruption that began in Reykjanes on the evening of August 22 ended on the 6th of September. This eruption was the 9th one since the eruptions began in March 2021, and the 6th one in the current location. The eruption area is closed to visitors. Follow any updated news here.

The volcanic eruption at the Sundhnúkagígar crater has apparently ceased, with no signs of activity detected for over half a day. This is stated in an announcement by the Icelandic Met Office.

The eruption lasted for 14-days . This was the third longest eruption of the six that have occurred in the Sundhnúkagígar crater series since December 2023. The eruption that began in mid-March lasted for about 54 days, and the eruption that began at the end of May lasted for about 24 days. In terms of lava flow this eruption was measured as the largest to date, however, experts have been unable to correctly measure the lava spread as of yet due to poor weather conditions in the area.

However, land rise has already begun again at Svartsengi meaning the magma chamber is refilling. It is too early to state the rate of magma accretion, but initial model calculations suggest that it is similar to that before.

Access to the Blue Lagoon remains open, and a viewing platform is available on the Grindavikurvegur road to view the fresh lava.
