All hiking trails closed today 16th July

All hiking trails in the eruption area are closed today, Sunday July 16th.

This has been decided to ensure the safety of first responders, SAR members and visitors. A lot of volcanic gases and smoke from wildfires are at the eruption site and are covering the hiking trails. Safety can not be ensured under these circumstances.

The wind direction is unfavourable for hikers, although the wind is not as strong as yesterday. 

Today, our firefighters will focus on the wildfires north of the eruption site with the assistance of a helicopter from the coast guard.  

The decision on closing will be reconsidered tomorrow morning, Monday, July 17th at 9 Am.
