Monument of Jón Þorkelsson
At Innri-Njarðvíkur Church, you will find a monument of Jón Þorkelsson created by the artist Ríkharð Jónsson. This work is among Ríkharður's greatest creations and was unveiled in May 1965. The monument portrays Jón Þorkelsson sitting with a book in hand and two children seated opposite him, looking up at him in admiration.
Jón Thorkellius, born in Innri-Njarðvík in 1697, was a renowned scholar who fought for educational reforms in Iceland. He passed away in Copenhagen in 1759. Jón bequeathed all his possessions to poor schoolchildren in Kjalarnesþing and left behind a sizable fund for the establishment of the Álftanesi children's school. The fund also supported the first school in Reykjavík, and grants for school maintenance were given in many places.
Additionally, at the same location, you can find a memorial to Sveinbjörn Egilsson, the first rector of the Lærða school.
