What stores are located at KEF Airport?

We shop in the airport departure lounge for a variety of reasons. It might be to kill time before our flight departs or use up leftover foreign currency (though admittedly that’s less important now we use card payments for so many things). It’s a great opportunity to pick up any last minute gifts, especially if you have spent a lot of time out in the countryside where stores are few and far between.

For many of us, therefore, shopping at the airport has become part of our usual vacation ritual. If that’s you, then you’ll most likely be interested in finding out what you can buy as you leave Iceland. Let’s take a look at the stores that are located at Keflavik Airport so that you can be fully prepared before departure day.

Penninn Eymundsson

A good book is still one of the best ways to pass the time on a long flight. So why not use that excuse to treat yourself to a gripping novel from one of Iceland’s most renowned booksellers. Perhaps instead you might find a coffee table book packed with beautiful images of the Icelandic countryside. If you didn’t get the chance to browse in their Reykjavik store on Austurstræti then this is the ideal opportunity. The airport branch stocks books and magazines in both Icelandic and in foreign languages, as well as gift items.

Icemart souvenirs

Souvenirs make great gifts for those members of our friends and family that couldn’t join us on our trip, but they also provide a reminder for us of the experience. Icemart has a wide variety of items from collectibles to keepsakes. You might choose a pair of socks adorned with puffins, a mug for your coffee bearing a colourful picture of the Northern Lights or a calendar depicting the extraordinary scenery to count down the weeks and months to your next visit to Iceland. It’s all here, along with snacks to get you through the flight.

Blue Lagoon skincare

If you visited the iconic Blue Lagoon geothermal baths during your stay in Iceland then chances are you enjoyed the pampering treatments that are part of the experience. This skincare store sells some of the signature products from the Blue Lagoon so that you can carry on the regime once you get home. It’s a lovely way to remember your visit and your skin will thank you as well; it’s claimed that the natural ingredients in these products help to stave off the effects of ageing.

66°N

Upscale clothing brand 66°N designs and sells outdoor clothes that have been designed to withstand Icelandic winters. These high quality garments keep out the wind, rain and snow yet manage to be stylish at the same time. Whether you live somewhere where the weather is equally challenging or you’re keen to be more prepared for your next Icelandic trip, splurging on some of these pricey but exceptionally good value pieces will be a sensible investment and a purchase you won’t regret.

Rammagerðin

You won’t have travelled far round Iceland without being aware of its sheep. In spring, you may have seen lambs following their mothers along remote roadside pastures; in autumn, you might have joined in with the réttir. It’s hardly surprising, therefore, given how many sheep there are, that wool clothing is so prevalent. And one of the best places to buy it is from Rammagerðin. Founded in 1940, the brand focuses on Icelandic design and craftsmanship but places a special focus on wool products – surely you can squeeze a beanie in your carry on?

Elko

Electronics store Elko carries a variety of electronics from a number of well-known brands. Take advantage of the affordable prices by doing your browsing on their website before you get to the airport. You can arrange to have your purchases delivered to the departure lounge outlet for maximum convenience. Perhaps you could use a travel adaptor or power bank? Maybe you want to treat yourself to a new smart watch boasting GPS and Bluetooth capabilities? Take a look at the products online so you don’t miss out on a great deal.

Epal

Nordic design is soothing, beautiful and above all functional. This particular brand was founded in 1975 by Eyjólfur Pálsson, who trained in furniture design in Copenhagen. On his return to his native Iceland, he didn’t find the pieces that he craved, so he set about designing them inside. The items in this range of homewares, sometimes quirky but always quintessentially Nordic in their colours, materials or form, make a practical yet delightful purchase.

Kormákur & Skjöldur

The downtown Reykjavik branch of high end menswear store Kormákur & Skjöldur is located on Laugavegur, the main shopping street, but the Keflavik outlet is a huge bonus for departing passengers. Founded in 1996, the store specialises in items such as suits, coats, shirts and sportswear. As you’d expect when shopping for clothes in Iceland, there’s an abundance of thick, woollen garments that are ideally suited for being outside in the northern climate. You’ll find brands such as Barbour, Hansen and of course Kormákur & Skjöldur.

Eyesland

Browse the website to see the products offered by the cleverly-named Eyesland, which has stores in Reykjavik as well. This eyewear specialist offers everything: designer sunglasses from brands like Ray Ban and Oakley, or reading glasses that can mitigate the blue light issue from our late night use of tablets and smart phones. By ordering online, you benefit from all the big names in fashion eyewear but by picking up your order at Keflavik Airport you’ll qualify for duty free prices. A fitting service is offered at Eyesland’s Kringlunni, Grandi or Glæsibær branches so you can be sure that what’s delivered to the airport store will be absolutely right for your face.

Húrra

Fashionistas will relish the chance to browse in Húrra, a clothing store offering both womenswear and menswear. Take a look at the rack and see what catches your eye – something casual for cosy nights in or a glam outfit when you want to be the centre of attention. They stock fashion accessories too, so you might pick up a new bag or a pair of shoes to go with it.

Duty Free

Last but not least we come to Duty Free. Saving money on perfumes, spirits, tobacco products and other such items is one of the perks of international travel. In addition, you’ll find a broad selection of sweets, toys and gifts, so capitalise on your trip and make full use of your duty free allowance. If you tried it here, you might choose a bottle of the Icelandic spirit Brennivin or instead opt for your favourite tipple. There are two branches in the departures area as well as the large store in the arrivals hall so you can expect them to stock the items you’re looking for.

If you’re considering making some purchases at the airport, it’s worth researching what you’re after up front. Compare prices and you’ll be sure you’re getting a good deal. Sometimes you are able to pre-order specific items for collection, which enables you to get precisely what you’re looking for but at duty free pieces. Whatever your retail needs, allow plenty of time to catch your flight so you can browse the stores at Keflavik Airport before you board.
