What restaurants are located at KEF airport?
Zócalo
Satisfy your comfort food cravings with a little Mexican zing at Zócalo, recently opened at Keflavik Airport. This eatery offers a range of delicious dishes including tacos, burritos, quesadillas and laden nachos, as well as salads for those looking for a healthier option. Most dishes can be customised to incorporate your favourite protein, whether that’s chicken, barbacoa beef pulled pork or a veggie-friendly alternative. Expect food that’s as colourful as the country it represents, intended to put a smile on your face.
Hjá Höllu
The name Hjá Höllu translates as At Halla’s. Here, everything is made fresh using quality ingredients. Many of the dishes have a personal connection to the owner, such as the horseradish sandwich made using a family recipe or the local cod caught right here on the Reykjanes peninsula, which is the part of Iceland where Halla hails from. If you’ve an early morning flight, why not start your day like Halla does, with an oatmeal cookie. Jetting off later? Her organic pizza is just the ticket.
Yuzu
Yuzu is a popular burger chain that you may have seen in downtown Reykjavik and there’s also a branch at Keflavik. Mouthwatering Eastern flavours elevate the humble burger to something sensational, such as Yuzu Chilli, a cheeseburger with a twist, or the Kimchi Chicken, a nod to the cuisine of South Korea. If you’re flying out in the morning, Yuzu’s breakfast menu should hit the spot, whether it’s their avocado burger, waffles or scrumptious pancakes.
Sbarro
International favourite Sbarro specialises in New York style pizza served by the slice, as well as other Italian-American dishes such as stromboli and breadsticks. It boasts around 600 branches spread across 28 countries, one of which is right here at Keflavik Airport. If you’re feeling peckish, this is the ideal place to stave off those hunger pangs until you board your onward flight.
Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur
Don’t rule out having a hot dog during your stay in Iceland? This tasty street food snack is a big deal here and Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur is one of the pioneers. In Reykjavik, the Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur cart first opened for business in 1937. Since then, it has served a whole host of satisfied customers, including the rich and famous – even former US President Bill Clinton has ordered one. Fit in one last snack before you take off at this conveniently located airport branch.
Jómfrúin
Tap into Danish specialities as you call in to Jómfrúin. Tuck into Smørrebrød, the traditional open sandwich for which this Scandinavian country is world famous. Try one piled high with shrimps, smoked salmon, fried plaice or liver pâté. Alternatively indulge in a herring platter or for something more filling, opt for veal schnitzel, roast pork or salt baked celery root. There’s also an extensive bar menu if you just want something like cheese or olives to snack on while you wait for your flight to start boarding.
Keflavik Diner
Keflavik Airport was originally built during World War Two as a US military base. The first passenger terminal opened in 1949, but for many years the two were intertwined, as departing passengers had to enter the military base to be able to catch their commercial flight. This diner is a nod to the area’s links with the USA, serving up typical American-style dishes with a sprinkle of Icelandic flair.
Bakað
Sometimes all you need is a bakery and this one’s a standout. Maybe you didn’t get enough cinnamon buns or perhaps you’re keen to try happy marriage cake with your spouse. For something a little more substantial, Bakað sells a range of sandwiches, baguettes, bagels and croissants. They come with a variety of fillings, including classics like ham and cheese as well as those that are a little more unusual such as falafel or creamy asparagus. Eat in, or order it to go and enjoy in on board.
La Trattoria
There’s something comforting about Italian food; you could liken it to a warm hug but on a plate. The cuisine served at Keflavik’s very own trattoria is no different. This is a great choice if you’re looking for a filling but delicious meal to tide you over until you disembark at the end of your journey. Simple ingredients are expertly combined to leave a lasting impression on your tastebuds. Whether your final destination is Italy, or not, this is sure to be a hit.
Elda
Cafeteria-style Elda is the ideal place for grabbing something in a hurry. So, if time has run away with you and your flight’s already been called, then a quick pitstop here is ideal. There’s plenty of choice. You can pick up a bowl of skyr laden with fresh berries and granola, or grab a smoothie packed with high-energy, healthy ingredients. If you have a little more time, fuel up on Icelandic specialities such as lamb shank and oven-baked cod – not only hearty meals but a fitting farewell to your time in this remarkable country.
Loksins Café and Bar
This stylish eatery is popular both for its food and as a bar. It’s a long term tenant at Keflavik, but in March 2024 moved within the airport to a new location which has been designed by HAF Studio. The new space has been thought out to be attractive but also functional, whether you’ve stopped for a beer or plan to order some food. On the menu are pastries, breakfast bowls, salads, ciabattas and a range of hot dishes.
As you can see there’s a surprising variety of eateries to choose from, even if you’re in a rush. If your flight departs after lunch or later in the day, these might tempt you to arrive a bit earlier so there’s time to enjoy an unhurried meal as well as a drink or two. International favourites and Icelandic specialities can both be found here. And for those that couldn’t bear to drag themselves away from Reykjavik’s many attractions or the extraordinary scenery of the surrounding countryside, there are plenty of options for grabbing something on the go, such as a sandwich or pastry to go with one last cup of Icelandic coffee.
So why not round off your trip by visiting one or more of Keflavik’s restaurants and cafés? You won’t be disappointed with what you find.
