The Volcanic Way - Volcano tourism

The marketing offices of South Iceland and Reykjanes in collaboration with numerous partner companies in the regions have been developing and shaping a new travel route that takes travelers through both Reykjanes and South Iceland, where eight volcanoes lead the way.

Planning and shaping the route began in 2021, and there is therefore a lot of time and work behind the development of the route. The route is intended to both extend the stay of guests whilst also increasing the number of overnight stays in the regions, as the regions have a lot to offer. 'The Volcanic Way' divides the regions into eight stages, making it easier for travelers to plan their stay.

"We are very excited to finally have the opportunity to present this project, as there is a lot of and, above all, fun work behind it" says Ragnhildur Sveinbjarnardóttir, CEO Visit South Iceland.

‘The Volcanic Way’ was designed by locals and is intended to both extend the stay of guests whilst also increasing the number of overnight stays in the regions, as the regions have a lot to offer. Divided into 8 stages, or 8 volcanoes, the route makes it easier for travelers to map out what to see, where to stay, and where to go along the way.

"With the project, we want to give our guests the opportunity to learn about both the history and culture of the regions, and create a platform where those interested can learn about the power of volcanoes in a safe and interesting way. Volcanoes have had a great impact on communities and now is the time to share our history and the volcanoes
" adds Þuríður Aradóttir Braun, director of Visit Reykjanes.

Volcano tourism, a niche but growing sector of the travel industry, involves visiting geothermal wonders and dormant volcanoes. This can range from observing eruptions from a safe distance to hiking on volcanic landscapes, exploring lava tubes, or visiting geothermal areas.

"There is a huge and untapped opportunity in volcano tourism in Iceland, It is great for tourism companies in the region to have tools in their hands that can be better utilized. Especially in light of recent events, as Iceland's image has clearly been affected by the volcano debate" says Ragnhildur Ágústsdóttir, owner of Lava Show.
