SMS notifications sent out to visitors and residents regarding the earthquakes in Reykjanes
The Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management, in consultation with the Reykjanes chief of police, have turned on notifications by SMS messages to visitors that enter a certain area in the region due to the earthquake swarm that started on the 4th of July.

The Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management, in consultation with the Reykjanes chief of police, have turned on notifications by SMS messages to visitors that enter a certain area in the region due to the earthquake swarm that started on the 4th of July.
The reason for the messages is to alert visitors about the situation regarding the earthquakes, why they occur and to get them to stay alert when travelling in the region. Be aware of possible rockfalls and landslides due to the earthquakes and stay away from mountains and slopes. This seismic activity could lead to a volcanic eruption close to the centre of the earthquake swarm. If it comes to that, the SMS notifications will be updated with messages concerning that.
The messages sent out to are as follows:
Police: Reykjanes peninsula – earthquakes! Increased seismic activity in the area. Stay away from slopes and cliffs due to danger of rockfall and landslides. A volcanic eruption might start with short notice.
