Severe weather warnings across Iceland

Severe weather is sweeping across the country this afternoon, with almost all international flights canceled and roads in all parts of the country in an uncertain state. A meteorologist says the storm will hit harshly and predicts strong gusts. Parents in the capital area are urged to pick up their children from school and travelers are recommended to stay indoors and avoid any travel during the storm hours.

The weather is rapidly deteriorating in the southwest, especially the Reykjanes region, from midday, with orange storm and rain warnings coming into effect at 2 p.m. The warnings will then roll into other parts of the country shortly afterwards, and almost the entire country will be orange by 5 p.m.

There are major disruptions to flights today, with almost all flights to and from the country after 1pm being cancelled, according to the Isavia website. Roads across the country are also at an uncertainty level, which means they could be closed at short notice. The uncertainty level will take effect on Reykjanesbraut, Hellisheiði, Þrengslar and Mosfellsheiði at noon. Holtavörðuheiði and Öxnadalsheiði have already been closed.

The storm is expected to continue early tomorrow morning and into the late afternoon. Be sure to avoid any unneccessary travel.
