Hiking and camping at Litli Hrútur Volcano with Harmen Hoek
In July of 2023, the renowned explorer and filmmaker, Harmen Hoek, embarked on a captivating five-day expedition through the breathtaking landscapes of Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula. Serendipitously, the Litli Hrútur eruption had recently commenced, prompting Harmen to pitch his tent at a safe vantage point, affording him an unparalleled view of Iceland's awe-inspiring spectacle as molten lava pierced the night sky. Resulting in this stunning piece of filmmaking as seen below.
His odyssey commenced at Kleifarvatn lake, located near the Seltún geothermal area. Harmen traversed the highlands of Reykjanes, journeying past Arnavatn lake and Djúpavatn lake. He there explored the vibrant landscapes of Sogin, Grænadyngja, and Trölladyngja.
The subsequent day, he followed a scenic route southward through the Geldingadalir Valley, which had borne witness to eruptions in 2022 and 2021 from the Fagradalsfjall Volcano. Venturing through the ancient Ögmundarhraun lava fields, dating back to 1151 AD, he arrived on the opposite shore of Kleifarvatn lake, where he savored a tranquil night on the beach beneath the star-studded Icelandic sky.
On the following day, Harmen scaled the eastern ridge of the lake and secured a ride to the enchanting town of Grindavík. This coastal gem presented a refreshing contrast to the untamed wilderness he had been traversing.
Continuing the excursion to the southwestern tip of the peninsula, he explored the historic craters of Stampar. "Camping amidst the tranquil sand dunes of Sandvík beach provided a serene experience, in stark contrast to the volcanic vigor I had witnessed earlier."
To culminate his remarkable journey, Harmen paid a visit to the vibrant Gunnuhver hot spring, where the Earth's geothermal energy was showcased in all its splendor. However, the pièce de résistance awaited him at the renowned Blue Lagoon. Nourished by the warm waters from the Svartsengi geothermal power plant, this ethereal azure oasis offered the perfect denouement to his adventure.
While soaking in the soothing waters, encircled by the untamed beauty of the Reykjanes Peninsula, Harmen couldn't help but contemplate the extraordinary natural wonders he had encountered during this expedition. Iceland's volcanic heart had unveiled itself to him in all its fiery majesty, etching an enduring imprint on his soul. This adventure bore testament to the Earth's immense power and allure, an experience that left him profoundly moved.
The trip was carefully organised along with us at Visit Reykjanes and all safety protocols were followed. Harmen hiked numerous marked paths on the Reykjanes peninsula.
