Hazardous conditions at two popular tourist destinations

Due to seismic activity, hazardous conditions have developed at two popular tourist destinations on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
Recently, new cracks have formed on Valahnúkur, a popular viewpoint near Reykjanestá. Valahnúkur is a tuff mountain that is gradually eroding – cracks have previously been reported there, and the path leading up the hill is currently closed off. The municipality of Reykjanesbær has taken steps to increase signage in the area as a result.
Subsidence and sinkholes have also been observed near the Bridge Between Continents, another popular stop on the peninsula. Visitors are advised to proceed with caution and to stay on marked trails and paths.
Given the circumstances, it is also important to exercise caution near steep slopes throughout the Reykjanes area and to remain on marked hiking routes whenever possible.
