Latest updates on eruption in Iceland
Activity has been fairly stable, and yesterday morning the eruption subsided. Along with that, the visible activity in the central crater, the crater that has been the most active so far, decreased significantly. The eruption is estimated to be half the size of the previous eruption.
Three craters are still active, the southern one has been the smallest in recent days, but activity in it, as well as in the northernmost crater, seems to be fairly consistent. The central crater has been feeding a series of lava along Stóra Skógfell and further along the defences at Svartsengi and Blue Lagoon. The decrease in activity should result in less lava flow to the dikes at Svartsengi and the Blue Lagoon.
In fact, the lava that lead from the central crater managed to reach the Blue Lagoon car park. Workers managed to fill a gap in one of the berms to ensure the Blue Lagoon itself remained protected, with only the car park and a small service building falling victim to the lava. The Blue Lagoon stated this was a fresh challenge, and are working to find solutions so they can reopen the Lagoon as soon as possible. Overnight, workers have been cooling the lava that surrounds the Blue Lagoon and Svartsengi, the powerplant. This is done using water cannons.
